welcome to reality. if you lived here, you’d be home now.

Then & Now

May 27th, 2008

Thump, thump, thump, thump…You’ve got to MOVE IT!

Two girls dance together, sandwiching the unsuspecting poor sob between them. They laugh and give each other knowing looks. The world is theirs.

Then, we had cosmos in hand (and didn’t even spill them!). The girl was my cousin, and we were hotties who (likely insufferably) knew it. The guy was likely an Air Force Academy cadet, pleased with how “cool” he was to dance with hot older women.

Today, years later, it’s the credits to Madagascar. We have Luna bars in hand (and don’t even smudge chocolate all over). The girl is my Maya, and we’re sandwiching Gavin, who is resisting going back to his nap. We laugh together, and I wouldn’t go back to the nightclub even if you paid me.

Often, growing up sucks. Today, it doesn’t.

Quotes of the Day

May 8th, 2008

From my Google widget:

I believe in looking reality straight in the eye and denying it.
- Garrison Keillor

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.
- Philip K. Dick

Heh.

That about sums it up

April 3rd, 2008

Heather Armstrong managed to capture just how I often feel about my 3-1/2 year old princess:

That sweet little baby has turned into a sweet little girl, and believe me, there are days when I want to glue a bucket to her head just to muffle the whining, and then position her so that she’ll walk blindly into a wall, but on days like today, I understand that she is and always will be the best thing that has ever happened to me.

(emphasis added)

Okay, maybe I’d skip the glue. Just sayin’.

Time Suck

September 8th, 2007

After the Carnival of the Godless earlier in the week, I surfed on to a different site. Then another site. Then, eventually, landed at a web comic called Irregular Webcomic. This pretty much sums up my free time since then:

click to open full-sized in a new window

Aaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

I haven’t spent this much time reading a single web comic since when I first discovered Sluggy Freelance in May of 1999 and read the whole archive front to back. That reminds me…I haven’t read Sluggy in probably a couple years (the alien story just kind of — should I go there? — alienated me).

Of course, this webcomic now has 1000 more strips in its archive since then, yipe, yipe, yipe!

Carry on. And you’re welcome.

Word of the Day

March 1st, 2007

From wordsmith.org:

omphaloskepsis (om-fuh-lo-SKEP-sis) noun

Contemplation of one’s navel.

[From Greek omphalos (navel) + skepsis (act of looking, examination).
Ultimately from the Indo-European root spek- (to observe) which is
also the ancestor of suspect, spectrum, bishop (literally, overseer),
despise, espionage, telescope, spectator, and spectacles.]

I’m going to use this. I’m just not sure how yet.

The power of the telly

February 5th, 2007

Maya has a new love in her life. Well, actually, she has four of them, dressed in yellow, blue, red, and purple shirts. Yes, Maya loves the Wiggles. It all started when Mike saw a smidge of an episode on Disney one Saturday morning, then commented later, “you know, that was kind of cute.” When I was at Sam’s a week or so later, I saw a 2-DVD package for under $10, and thought, why not?

Maya is now a Wiggle-addict, and asks for them multiple times per day. With only two videos, this gets old very fast — but at least she’s singing and dancing with them. And really, I kind of like them.

Just now, Maya pointed up at the Granny Smith apples sitting on my counter:

“Apples! Wiggles eat apples.”

Yes, honey — Anthony eats apples, doesn’t he? Would you like some apple?

“YEAH!!!”

This is a kid who’s mostly turned up her elfin nose at apples lately (in favor of pistachios and grapes). Ah, the power of a good role model.

That smile…

January 25th, 2007

.

You know that smile I was rhapsodizing about yesterday? Here it is. I mean seriously. Tasty.

Me, I’m being a goof, as usual.

Thank you Sean for the pics!
